Hanshi Jesús Jiménez – Sunsu Dojo

Hanshi Jesús Jiménez | Ku-Dan (9th Degree Black Belt)

Hanshi Jesús M. Jiménez, Ku-Dan, embodies a rare and powerful synergy between the analytical precision of the courtroom and the disciplined spirit of Okinawan martial arts. Born in Santurce and now living in Guayama, Puerto Rico, Hanshi Jiménez has spent over four decades balancing his legal career with a lifelong commitment to the martial arts.

As a seasoned litigation attorney, his expertise spans the complexities of contracts, family law, property, and corporate litigation. His professional performance has been recognized by the highest judicial levels in Puerto Rico, having served on the Bar Examination Board by appointment of the Supreme Court and receiving the prestigious Trial Lawyer of the Year award in 1994. His career reflects a life governed by the same principles of integrity and focus he cultivates in the dojo.

His martial journey began at the age of eleven with Judo, but it was in 1978 that he found his true calling in the Order of Isshin-Ryu Karate. His early years were defined by a rapid ascent; by 1980, while still a brown belt, he inherited his first dojo—a wooden building where sweat and tradition met—after his initial instructor moved to pursue a medical career. This transition marked the beginning of a legendary lineage of mentorship, leading him to study under Sensei Juan De Dios Lopez and, eventually, his long-time teacher, Grandmaster Walter “Toby” Cooling.

Hanshi Jiménez’s expertise is remarkably diverse, reaching beyond Isshin-Ryu into Aikido, San Yama Bushi Ryu Jutjutsu, and earning the rank of Go-Dan in Matayoshi Kobudo. His dedication has earned him inductions into both the Puerto Rico Martial Arts Hall of Fame (1998) and the Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame (2016). In June 2023, following the passing of Grandmaster Cooling, Hanshi Jiménez entered a new chapter of leadership. Alongside Hanshi Ronnie Cimorosi, he co-founded Isshinryu Kazoku (Family). This organization was born from a deep-rooted desire to honor their late mentor by preserving the authenticity of his teachings and ensuring the spirit of Isshin-Ryu continues to flourish for the next generation.

Whether advocating for a client or guiding a student through the intricacies of a kata, Hanshi Jiménez lives by a simple but profound philosophy: Train hard, train often. Study every movement until it becomes natural, and always work as if training for real-life situations. Today, he continues to serve his community as a counselor, a mentor, and a guardian of a rich martial heritage.
